MLS - 524 Clinical Immunohematology


This course provides the student with the practical and theoretical knowledge in whole blood collection, processing, and transfusion that is necessary to work in a blood center or clinical transfusion service. Topics include red cell immunology, genetics, and membrane biochemistry; characteristics of human blood group systems; serological testing systems; parentage testing; red cell antibody detection and identification; pretransfusion testing; quality management; blood product manufacturing including blood procurement, component preparation, and donor infectious disease testing; transfusion medicine practice; adverse effects of transfusion; and hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn (HDFN).
