RMD - 567 Growth, Development and the Life Cycle


This course uses a multi-disciplinary case based approach to normal neo-natal to geriatric development and disease related to different stages of the life cycle. Students learn to identify alterations and underlying pathophysiology which occur in the disease state, the significance of symptoms, signs and other ancillary data. Students also learn appropriate diagnostic modalities in evaluation of normal development and diseases related to different stages of the life cycle. Students are expected to describe the mechanism of action and use of pharmacologic agents for the treatment of these diseases. Students are also expected to construct differential diagnoses for common presenting symptoms of diseases associated with specific stages of the life cycle. Students learn how to collect an appropriate history and conduct a relevant physical exam and to recognize abnormal findings in this exam. Students also learn key techniques in communicating with patients, families, and colleagues. Finally, students examine epidemiological and socioeconomic aspects of health and disease through the life cycle and explore selected ethical issues related to the clinical cases presented in the course.
