EMD - 717 Disaster Medicine


All activities will be conducted online through the use of web-based study modules, and discussion forums. Students will be exposed to the concepts of managing a disaster scene (triage, incident command structure) and performing a hazard vulnerability analysis.

Fundamental disaster medicine concepts regarding Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, Explosive (CBRNE injuries), in addition to natural disasters and psycho-behavioral implications of such events, will also be completed online. Each module will be followed by a short quiz to test comprehension. There are daily questions to be individually completed and two weekly group projects (all students collaborate on one answer) to be completed in the forums. A final exam including a specific disaster scenario (presented online) will also be administered.

Upon completion of this rotation, the student will be able to:

  1. Describe the fundamental concepts of Hospital Incident Command System (HICS)
  2. Differentiate the various categories underlying triage in disaster situations
  3. Apply the concepts of Hazard Vulnerability Analysis
  4. Describe the essential elements behind Chemical Biological Radiological, Nuclear, Explosive (CBRNE), and natural disasters
