HSC - 321 Hematology This course is designed to introduce basic hematologic concepts and introduce concepts in coagulation and hemostasis as well as urinalysis and analysis of the various body fluids. Topics include: Venipuncture, complete blood counts (CBCs), hemopoietic theory, erythrocyte metabolism, hemoglobin synthesis, erythrocyte dyscrasias, FAB classifications of leukemias and leukocyte dyscrasias of various etiologies. Included is the analysis of various body fluids with emphasis on the theory and practice of clinical procedures. Component topics will include the analyses of urine, cerebral spinal fluid, synovial fluid, pleural fluid, peritoneal fluid, pericardial fluid, feces, semen, and the differentiation of transudates and exudates. Prerequisite: Departmental permission. Credit Hours: (4)
