MLS - 321 Clinical Immunology I

An introduction to the basic concepts and terminology of immunity including development, structure and function of the lymphoid systems; the basis of antigenicity; antibody structure; methods of detection and measurement; mechanism of cellular immunity; white cell function; hypersensitivity reactions; the complement system; and mechanisms of immune suppression and tolerance. In the laboratory portion of the class, students become familiar with the purpose, principles, performance and interpretation of various serological tests used routinely in the clinical laboratory for the diagnosis of syphilis and other infectious diseases, as well as autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and thyroiditis.
